Captured through a reverse camera in a car, ReverseMe utilises progressive technology to comment on feelings of stagnation. Pain and frustration are familiar products of a lack of progression. Recorded in one take, this two minute video work is a raw account of taking a few steps forward, yet inevitably being pushed back by the moving car. Accompanied with audio of internal dialogue, doubt becomes concrete and any sense of progress for the main subject dissipates.

The uneven terrain, combined with the unsteady, unsuitable footwear makes for a difficult journey. Similarly, for Stradbroke Island locals, the large presence of sand mines and the contradictions they produce, make for a confusing situation. The bare foot, communicating closely with the land, is the ideal footprint that humans should have with the island. As this is far from reality, our heels stubbornly sink into the ground.

This video installation is an immediate response to feelings of confusion associated with the transition into adulthood. Resisting to complete multiple adult tasks, I question structures of society I am asked to follow as an adolescent. Drawing on notions of nostalgia, I began to play in front of the camera in familiar places, developing a new autonomy beyond expectations of society.

In 2013, I received my first camera. The only images I captured were of flora and fauna. Very blurry images of flora and fauna. I found my collection from 2013 and decided to cut the images up to recreate new shapes on a piece of old matboard.
